This just feels like yesterday that we said goodbye to She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Netflix and Dreamworks’ excellent animated reboot of the iconic heroine and her friends. And while Prince Adam is extinct on classic adventures and new on streamer, Adora and Etheria leap into a whole new realm … and a whole different streamer.
Variety Reports Amazon Studios has partnered with DreamWorks Animation to develop new live-action She-Ra series for Prime Video. The new show, which is currently in the very early stages of development and does not yet have a creative team or cast attached, will not be a continuation of the story told in either She-Rais classic Masters of the Universe spin-off in the 80s, or the rebooted story told in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Instead, it’ll be a whole new fantasy of the character, unrelated to previous series.
It’s a surprising gesture, not just to see She-Ra take the leap into live action (Amazon is certainly embarking on some fantastic adventures of swords and witchcraft right now, between its the Lord of the Rings prequel series and Wheel of time adaptation). But Mattel’s big plans for the the rest of Masters of the Universe world at the moment are attached to Netflix, the former home of She-Ra for Princesses of power. There you will find the continuous, Following the head of Kevin-Smith from the original He-man cartoon with gritty Masters of the Universe: Revelations, as well as a brand new version for young audiences in the form of 3DCG Series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, is set to debut on September 15. Extracting Adora from that circle to bring her not only to a new platform, but to a whole new medium for the character, could be very interesting indeed.
We will bring you more information about Amazon’s plans for She-Ra as we learn them.
